Hi Andy,

I love your blog, and I want to introduce you to Inside Jobs (www.insidejobs.com), a new career exploration website that I think you will be impressed with. We'd be a great resource for your readers and would love to be featured on your blog—our goal is to be far more extensive than any other career resource, and we have a good start down that path.

I've included a brief summary of our site below. I'd love to send you more information about the site and chat about a blog feature, interview etc. if you're interested. Please let me know.

Look forward to hearing from you,

In a brief overview of our Inside Jobs, we've written thousands of job descriptions to help people figure out what they want to do in their career. We've broken down jargon so the descriptions are fun to read and include salary ranges, work environment information, and a "how to become" section that talks about education and training needed to enter a job.

We’re also adding interactive media components to our descriptions, so you can watch informational interviews, and hear from people in the field about what really think about their position. Finally, we have tracked resumes and job posting to figure out which jobs most commonly precede and follow a given position, so that users can examine common career trajectories in a field.

Nice piece Andy. I've found myself in the same position - hustling to find the perfect answers to questions from a guy who doesn't really care.

All in a days work, eh?

I have always liked the idea of going to the former boss because they are going to be giving references - so I think this gets them involved early in the process and helps you develop those distinguishing traits.

Peers are also good - I think the point is you are looking for objective observations.

I have always tried to create a cover letter that was informative and if nothing else, grammatically correct.
Now, I am wondering why I didn't get a call or what I can change in that opening message.

I have spent 24 hours wondering what sets me apart from the pack. I can think of my career, but I don't have that great one-liner or quote from a supervisor.

How far do I reach into the memory bank? Do I go to my career collection of thank you notes -- the ego booster file -- or ask that intimate friend or work peer what makes me a good fit?

Thank you for this post. I want to share it with so many candidates. The thing is that it's okay if you have the "cutesy" email. Not my thing but if that is an address you have used for awhile and your friends and family are used to using it we are not suggesting that you change it. For a job search you need a professional email address preferably yourname@emailprovider.com. There are plenty of free email providers out there (gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc.. Pick one and use it for your job search. Not only will you appear more professional but it will keep your job search totally separate.

Now the barking in the background...

Hey Andy-

Great post, as usual. It's interesting that this same logic can be used as a recruiter or in your own job, not just as a job seeker.

"What makes me a better recruiter than the other guy."
"Why I should manage the department."
"Why I should get the promotion."

For some of us, it is difficult to self-promote, as it goes against almost every bone in our human resource, self-deprecating bodies. Learning to love who we are, what we can provide, how we best serve and then expelling that is just one more rung toward the next level. We wait..., and wait.., hoping someone will recognize it - that they will see our value. Believing it is a big part of that...

Proving our own worth is a continual process.

It is an excellent point you make and one that each job seeker should contemplate and implement immediately.

I learned this technique years ago and have implemented it for myself as well as shared it with others. It is such a powerful tool to know what sets you apart from the thousands of other applicants. I used this technique to get my current job and have helped them reduce costs by over 50% in the first year of my employ - one of the things I do to add value to the company and the bottom line.

Kudos for such an outstanding article, Andy!

While I, too, love word pictures... it concerns me a bit that when thinking of or dealing with candidates that the only options are "kiss it" - love it, put it forward, becomes a sendout, worthy candidate ...
or "kill it" - hate it, douse it with flames, shoot it down, in the dead file, an unworthy candidate.

How about we simply say "yes" or "no" for now? The "no" could be a "yes" in the future and the "yes" may be a rock star that disappoints in the live performance - can we say Black Eyed Peas?

I agree that time is of the essence and we have very little time to waste, as a third-party recruiter or in-house, problems are waiting to be solved - you can be the solver, either now of current issues or of future issues by establishing and maintaining MANY relationships/resumes/profiles.

I guess we all do this job differently. I, for one, don't kill anything.
